Solar Nebula

Our Sun formed from the gravitation collapse of a molecular cloud floating in space. As it evolved it left behind a disc of gas and dust called a solar nebula. It was from within this nebula the planets are thought to have formed, a process called accretion. Accretion is where dust forms into clumps through a slight gravitation attraction, something like how dust bunnies form in a corner of a room. At first they start off very small but over millions of years gradually get larger. As the clumps increase in size, their collisions become more violent and soon larger objects like planetismals begin to form.
